I noticed this one popping up more than a few times on the "Now Playing" list. Is it as good as all the shining reviews would lead me to believe? More importantly for anyone that owns it - how good is the SDK?
I'm something of a fiend for designing levels. I started with DOOM 2, right on through Starcraft and NWN, and could use something new to work on.

The main reason I ask, is that for the first time in 3 (!) years, i'll be getting a new computer (in a few days.) Its got pretty nice specs on it, so all these games that were previously nothing but pipe dreams, I can actually run. I'd kind of like to have something to better appreciate that, and being able to play something with forum goers that aren't Alpha Testers would be nice, too.

Any other game suggestions mayhaps? And how is Rome: Total War?

Half Life 2 doesnt run that hard really, Now Doom 3 will make your computer hang itself from the clothes bar in your closet if its not uber enough

edit: and i suggest getting half life 2 "collectors edition" if you intend on getting it. hl2 is 54.99 (i assume hl2 and cs source maybe) but the collectros edition is 59.99 with cs source, hl source, a t shirt (xl only, shrinking works wonders and then some - my smallest shirts are xl and my biggest are medium DAMN YOU COTTON) and the awesome strategy guide

I would tell you, but I keep getting a memory error. And I know I'm not the only one getting it.

From what I have heard H2 is worth it though.

Hmm. I was thinking about DOOM 3 as well, but it seems that the overwhelming impression that I get of it from other people is that it's a very nice engine with a game slapped onto it so that they could sell it.

I disagree with Doom3 being a resource hog. But Spooky is right - its so dark and dreary that by the end you are only finishing it to see the damn ending.

Don't get me started on the 'half of a real game' that is Halo 2.

Its stuck on some superman engine that can apparently render real images that actually exist in our dimension, but the game is so dark you can't see for crap ANYWAY, you think in a game where the main character is blind AND its an FPS it would be alot easier on the computer

As far as I can tell, my head is still attached - but HL2 is really impressive. You wouldn't think that hitting everything around you with a crowbar to see what happens would be as entertaining as it is .. but there it is, all the same.

I found chucking random stuff everywhere with the grav gun in the demo HIGHLY entertaining, nothing like beaning a headcrab zombie with a broken board or getting somewhere high and pulling a desk up to you then dropping it on something

Both Half life 2 and Rome: Total War are some the best single player games I've ever played. I'm assuming you've gotten HL2. Try Rome: TW after beating HL2 if you enjoy strategy games at all. Be sure to put the unit size on "large" or "huge" if your system can handle it.

Oh yeah... I'm a huge fan of the total war stuff as well.

None of that AWFUL RTS nonsense of building your units while you're fighting... the strategy is strategy... and the fight is the fight. I utterly hate the sheer amount of hair-pulling micromanaging a lot of those 'cutting-edge' games require...

Also count me in, I bought HL1 the day it was released and I count it as my single best game purchase ever. (that game and all it's mods has logged more playtime than any 2 others combined I'd say. Favorites being TFC and DoD... and natural selection is kinda fun as well). I really enjoyed HL2 going through it single... and so far have enjoyed it multi. I'm waiting to see if it's anywhere near as successfull in the mods community. As that's the single-biggest fun item in it's replay factor.

Cant find much better fun than using the grav gun in Ravenholm to shoot large saw blades at walls and zombies and such.
